United States Congresswoman Nita Lowey invited Rockland Business Association members to voice their opinions and concerns about business issues they face in an intimate meeting with county officials earlier this month.

Congresswoman Lowey, Democrat for the 18th District, joined by Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski Jr. and Clarkstown Town Clerk David Carlucci listened as RBA members and President/CEO Al Samuels spoke on topics ranging from the state of the current health care system to the impact of unions on business.

“We had a truly substantive conversation with the Congresswoman,” Samuels said. “It was an open dialogue and we feel confident there are a couple of areas that she will be pursing as a result of information discussed with her by the local business people.”

Patrick Dias, General Manger/Member, Blackwalnut, LLC, shared his experience dealing with insurance issues. “It was good to hear how other business people are handling the same situations,” Dias said. “I was also impressed with the way the Congresswoman listened.”

Other members like Christine Bailey, Controller for Vista Electrical Contractors, Inc., came away with a greater understanding of a particular business topic. “I was under the impression that New York State had some say in governing the increases in the health care that companies put out. I was amazed to learn that they did not,” Bailey said.

Catherine Nowicki, Chair of Economic Development in Clarkstown, spoke of the RBA’s impact on business development in her area. “I wanted the Congresswoman to know the support of the RBA has made a tremendous difference in Clarkstown, bringing in 26 small businesses into the town over the past year-and-a-half,” she said.

Lowey listened and responded to the concerns and suggestions offered by Samuels and the RBA members. “I was pleased to join the Rockland Business Association for an extraordinarily productive discussion,” she said. “We had an open dialogue, and the exchange of ideas was helpful to me. On a range of issues, the participants had ideas and suggestions that I look forward to pursuing.”

Chairman of the RBA Board of Directors and President of Executive Compensation Planners, Inc. Hector May echoed Lowey’s sentiment, “It was a good beginning to what I think should be an ongoing dialogue,” he said.
