What’s Happening: 1st Quarter 2022

The first quarter of 2022 was filled with much discussion on the progress of the State Budget. In February we held a roundtable discussion on things members wanted to see in the budget. And, meeting in March with only three weeks left before the budget was due, we followed-up with a discussion on realities of what would (or would not) be included.
While not directly related to business, the issue of reforms to the 2019 bail reform legislation was a high priority. Although we would have preferred more being done in this area, a door has been opened for further debate. Law enforcement agencies and District Attorney’s, for the most part, articulated this thought in their comments after the budget was passed.
Alcohol to Go was an important issue for our Hospitality industry and it was gratifying to have it re-instated. The $7 billion for child care was welcomed, but not without concern. It is feared that the number of folks who will be eligible for benefits will exceed projections. The Home Care industry is pleased with the $7.4 billion being provided for their workforce, but note it’s not enough to meet actual cost of living needs in communities like ours.
Education, infrastructure and environmental issues all seemed to fare well, but more is needed to reduce regulatory issues that inhibit business. And, for many, the issue of policy matters being made part of the budget process remains a key concern.
Lucy Redzeposki, Director, Economic Development & Tourism, visited both groups to discuss the County’s grant programs for small business and restaurants. And, in January, Haverstraw Village Mayor Mike Kohut spoke to ED/GA about New York awarding the village a Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant of $10 million. DRI awards already had been granted to area communities of Middletown, Kingston, New Rochelle and Peekskill, all cities. Haverstraw (and Ossining, also an awardee this year) are the first villages to receive this distinction in our area.
Also, in February, Mark Davidoff, Director of RCC Culinary Arts spoke to HTA about Nyack Feast and Craig Smith, Managing Director, Phoenix Theater Ensemble, reported on the upcoming Phoenix Festival to be held mid-September to mid-October. In March, the group heard from Doreen Zarcone of RCC on the college’s Micro Credentialing Program for the Hospitality Industry.
February’s Green Council event was a round table discussion based on a presentation by the Business Council of NY on the Clean Energy Communities Program. Several topics were discussed including NY State’s mandate to electrify all new buildings, retrofit existing buildings, promotion of electric vehicles, and the impact this will have on the existing electric grid.
In March, the Green Council was joined by Pat Fitzgerald of NYSERDA to introduce the New Construction Housing Program and Buildings of Excellence Programs. Pat provided some history and background on the New Construction Program and discussed its shift in emphasis to all-electric carbon-neutral ready buildings. Pat provided an overview of the performance thresholds and financial incentives available to builders and developers in the program. The savings could ultimately benefit the business owner.
Our first meeting in 2022 was in February and we continued to focus on personal development in helping HR leaders learn more about their own professional management styles. Management consulting experts Bob Ierace and Flory Hiatrites of Treehouse Consulting engaged the group with some exercises that helped participants identify their own leadership traits so they can better interact with the C-Suite of their companies and bring more value to the HR role in their respective organizations.
Our June virtual meeting on Legal Updates will once again feature Jackson Lewis in a review of the 2022 legislative trends affecting HR managers and employers.
In the meantime, we have reached out to our HR members to solicit their interest for future meeting topics so we can continue to meet the needs of our HR community by providing them topics that are most relevant to them.
We meet every other month, 5x a year, so our meetings are in February, April, June, September, and November being cognizant of the fact that December and January are probably the busiest months for our HR members.

Jan 18 – Tips for Hosting Event – Virtual or In Person with Donvil Collins of VeeKast. Speaker Donvil Collins, recently profiled on WCBS News Radio 880 with Joe Connolly thanks to Risa’s outreach, spoke to the group about event marketing mistakes, strategies to maximize attendance, strategies to attract deeper pocket individuals, and strategies to maximize the post-event value and impact. Donvil noted that one of the key components to running an online event is to create FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) so that people feel compelled to participate. Donvil covered other strategies that encourage people to donate during an online event and also talked about using video clips after the event to keep the excitement going and encourage others to attend the next one because of what they missed.
Feb 15 – LocaliQ presentation on Digital Ad Options – Andrew and Eileen from LocaliQ, part of LoHud, presented “How to Pick Your Best Marketing Channels in 2022.” Together they reviewed the 14 key marketing channels for 2022, next steps to implementing a 2022 strategy, understanding the buyer’s journey, and performing a SWOT analysis for your business. They also discussed clearly identifying your target market and offered new channels to consider including podcasts, social audio, AI marketing, and influencer marketing. Key takeaways were that there are plenty of options, assess your current marketing first, keep 2022 trends in mind, and variety often equals success.
March 15 – Connecting with LinkedIn to Grow Your Network – Presented by Risa Hoag of GMG Public Relations. Risa provided tips for identifying potential clients and referral sources through LinkedIn by using the power of the enormous database within LinkedIn. Tips included how to find contacts through college alumni networks on LinkedIn and breaking down the list by years of attendance, location, work history and job title. Risa also reviewed how to effectively use groups, update your profile, and post to get more engagement.
April 19 – Let’s Talk about The Tok! How can you take advantage of Tik Tok for your business? With Wave Wyld, TikTok Marketing Expert.
May 17 – Understanding Google Analytics with Michael Loewenberg of MESH Business Solutions, Inc.
June 21 – Email Marketing, how to make the most of your email list and email Best Practices with Thomas Nettesheim Partner Success Manager at Constant Contact.

WLC looks forward to in person meetings again in the spring, keeping in mind the safety and wellness of all participants. In January, WLC hosted Patricia Stark, renowned author and president of Patricia Stark Communication. Patricia offered a dynamic presentation entitled “Calmfidence: How to Trust Yourself, Tame Your Inner Critic and Shine In Any Spotlight.” The talk, aptly named after Patricia’s most recently published booked, taught audience members about everyday calmfidence, resilient calmfidence, communication calmfidence and natural calmfidence as important elements in our lives. Subsequently, there was an inspiring question and answer period in which Patricia shared the origins of her passion, as well as life changing experiences that motivated her to pursue her life’s work.
In February our WLC presenter was Joan Silvestri, Rockland Commissioner of Social Services. Joan presented “Re-Envisioning Tomorrow’s Workplace,” focusing upon insights on the changing workplace landscape, COVID’s impact on the workforce, and the explosive integration of technology as they all relate to the future of work. A thoughtful and engaging discussion followed illuminating such concepts as planned communication, worker resiliency, and the necessity of creativity and adaptability over content mastery.
In March the WLC hosted a roundtable discussion that was attended by 26 participants from the Rockland community. Audience members were given an opportunity to share about themselves, their businesses, lessons learned, and successes achieved during recent challenging times. Given the isolation we have faced during the pandemic and the intense focus on productivity, it was a welcome opportunity for interpersonal connections, networking, and the strengthening of relationships for the future.
